Premier Consulting Services Launches TÜV-ASI-Accepted Functional Safety Engineering Training Course
TÜV Certificate Program Acknowledges Competency as Functional Safety Engineers for Safety Instrumented Systems
IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 2, 2004 -- Premier Consulting Services, a leading safety and reliability consulting group for the process industry and an operating unit of Invensys Systems, Inc., today announced it has launched the industry’s first TÜV-ASI accepted functional safety engineering for safety instrumented systems (SIS) training course. Premier Consulting Services has been recognized by TÜV-ASI as its first accepted course provider.
The training course, titled “Premier Functional Safety Engineering,” (PFSE) addresses functional safety in the field of safety instrumented systems. The program was developed in cooperation with TÜV-ASI, a division of TÜV Rheinland Group and a global leader in independent testing and assessment services.
Premier Consulting Service’s training course is an integral component of the overall TÜV functional safety program, an extended vocational training curriculum that provides engineers working in the field of functional safety with support knowledge and real-world expertise. Upon successful completion of the training course and examination, participants are eligible to receive a TÜV certificate directly from Germany-based TÜV-ASI.
“It is an honor to be acknowledged by TÜV-ASI as the first accepted course provider of a curriculum that will be essential in helping process plants meet the industry’s international safety standards and competency requirements,” said Bob Adamski, Premier Consulting Service’s director. “The contents, material and final exams for this course have been reviewed and assessed positively by TÜV-ASI.”
National and international regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Britain’s Health and Safety Commission and its Health and Safety Executive (HSE), require process plants to comply with safety standards including IEC61511 and ANSI ISA S84.01. As part of the compliance, facility personnel involved in the safety lifecycle must show proof of competency through training by a recognized SIS program. Premier’s training course directly addresses the competency requirements of IEC61508-1 par. 6.2.1 (h) and IEC61511-1 par. 5.2.2.
“Throughout the industry we are beginning to witness a growing trend pointing to end-user requirements for all personnel involved in any part of the SIS safety lifecycle to prove functional safety competency,” Adamski said. “This requirement additionally extends to engineering contractors, integrators and SIS vendors.”
Participants wanting to register for the PFSE course must have a minimum of three to five years experience in the field of functional safety and a university degree or equivalent engineer-level responsibilities status certified by an employer.
The training course is presented over four days. The first three days of instruction are taught in a classroom setting and will provide participants with detailed information and realistic examples for understanding and mastering the requirements of IEC61508 and IEC61511 functional safety. On the last day, applicants much pass a two-part examination with a minimum score of 75 percent.
Certificates will be issued by TÜV-ASI upon verification of eligibility and review of final exam documents. Successful participants will also receive a corresponding identification number and may use the “TÜV FSEng” logo on their business cards. Certification is valid for five years. Revalidation requires passing a short exam covering updates in standards and best practices. TÜV-ASI will post a listing positively identifying and confirming the status of certification for each participant on its site at www.tuvasi.com.
