INTERBUS Safety System Certified
April 7, 2005 marks the certification of INTERBUS Safety, the safe fieldbus system, by the TÜV Rheinland Group (German Technical Inspectorate) and the BGIA (BG-Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) for use in safety applications up to SIL 3 according to DIN EN 61508 and Safety Category 4 according to DIN EN 954-1. In addition, the system meets the relevant specifications of the European Machinery Directive 98/37/EEC
The following have been tested:
Safe communication with INTERBUS Safety
Controller board with integrated safe controller
Safe I/O module with IP67 protection
SafetyProg safe programming interface
Safe software function blocks
All the components, which were developed jointly by Phoenix Contact and KW-Software based in Lemgo, Germany, are already being used in one of the Audi AG plants in Neckarsulm, Germany. Users were particularly impressed by the quick startup, easy operation, comprehensive diagnostics, and short shutdown times, which no other safe fieldbus and automation system offers at this time. The TÜV Rheinland and BGIA certification institutions consider the INTERBUS Safety system to be a milestone for similar solutions.
Once work on INTERBUS Safety has been completed, Phoenix Contact and KW-Software will start work on converting the safety concept to the PROFINET Ethernet standard. The initial results are expected to be presented at SPS/IPC/Drives 2005
