Honeywell's order is for the total plant simulation and includes modules for all major process units as well as the steam generation plant and ancillary

PHOENIX, Arizona -- The Industry Solutions business of Honeywell Automation and Control Solutions has announced that it has received a $1.9 million order for a Honeywell Hi-Spec Shadow Plant Simulator(TM) for the Comalco Alumina Refinery (CAR), located in Gladstone, Queensland.

Honeywell's order is for the total plant simulation and includes modules for all major process units as well as the steam generation plant and ancillary services equipment at the CAR site. The order is one of Honeywell's largest globally, with engineering already underway at Honeywell's Hi-Spec engineering offices in Brisbane, Perth and Singapore.

The 1.4 million tons per annum capacity alumina refinery, currently under construction, will utilize the simulator for training purposes in anticipation of an early and efficient plant production start-up of Stage I of its operations.

"The Shadow Plant Simulator will be used to train the Comalco's plant process engineers and operators in the use of the Honeywell Total Plant Distributed Control System(TM) (DCS) and Fail Safe Controllers," explains Jon Lippin, Honeywell's global leader for initiatives in the mining, minerals and metals industries. "The Simulator will also enable users to understand the operation and safety procedures required for this modern alumina refinery under a wide range of process and equipment conditions, including upset and failure scenarios".

Three training models have been allocated based on the DCS console design, with a model for each console operator's area: Redside, Whiteside and Boiler/Calcination. Staged delivery of the models will enable process design testing, DCS configuration checkout and control loop tuning before final training model delivery.

In addition, Honeywell will also prepare detailed training workbooks to assist instructors and students in obtaining maximum benefit from the Simulator and enable comprehensive operator training to be completed in readiness for plant start-up, slated for fourth quarter 2004.

The order is in addition to the DCS and design order for the site, which was received earlier this year. "Honeywell Pacific is pleased that our relationship with Comalco continues to grow at the Gladstone site," said Jon Lippin. "The order for the Shadow Plant Simulator reinforces the confidence that Comalco have in Honeywell to assist in building one of the worlds most modern and efficient alumina refineries using state-of-the-art technology."
