SIL Determination: Principles and Practical Experience
22 March 2006, The IEE Savoy Place, London, UK
Organised by the The IEE Functional Safety Professional Network
Introduction
Following on from its highly successful 2005 seminar on Methods and Tools for SIL Determination, and requests for a broader based themed event, the IEE is pleased to announce this second seminar in the SIL Determination series.
Industry increasingly relies upon computer based safety-related systems to achieve tolerable levels of risk. IEC 61508 and other standards in this series (e.g. IEC 61511 and IEC 62061) are increasingly being used to achieve the required functional safety. A key requirement of these standards is the determination of the functional safety requirements for the safety-related systems comprising the necessary safety functions and the Safety Integrity Level for each safety function. The concept of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) is fundamental in ensuring a safety- related system satisfactorily performs the required safety functions under all stated conditions within a defined time period.
A key feature of the event will be the opportunity to network with other people undertaking SIL determination and to share experiences. There will also be a small where there will be the opportunity to meet with suppliers of SIL Determination products and services.
Key Benefits of Attending
The seminar will consider a number of thematic issues related to the SIL concept. In particular:
? The concept of a risk based approach, including ALARP demonstration
? Specification of safety functions
? Calibration of SIL determination methods (e.g. Risk Graphs, LOPA)
? Design measures to achieve a specified SIL
? Common cause considerations
? Practical example of SIL assignment using the methodology used in IEC 62061
? Issues relating to legacy systems
Target Delegates
This event will be of interest to Engineers and Technical Managers from organisations that:
? Are responsible for management of safety, health and environmental systems
? Specify the safety requirements and target SIL of E/E/PE safety-related systems
? Provide safety-related systems designed to meet the target SIL and safety
requirements
? Are responsible for maintaining and optimising SIL performance on operational assets
