ESD systems from HIMA for one of the most modern production lines for sulphur-free diesel

(Brühl, Germany, 1/3/2005)

Emergency shut down (ESD) systems from HIMA are to be used in the Porvoo refinery in Finland in a new production line for sulphur-free diesel for the reliable operation of the plant.
This project is a joint undertaking (among others) between HIMA and Metso Automation, the leading Finnish manufacturer of automation and control technology, who is implementing the automation systems on behalf of the operator Fortum Oil.

The delivery from HIMA includes eight H51q-HRS ESD systems for the diesel plant, one H51q-HRS ESD system for the affiliated hydrogen system as well as technical support during the project.
One of the decisive factors for the award of contract was the ease of integration into the Metso control system MetsoDNA.

The nine ESD systems can be used in accordance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 up to SIL 3 and will process approximately 3,000 I/Os from the control point of view.
The coupling between the control system MetsoDNA and the HIMA H51q systems is set up on the basis of Ethernet connection.

The Finnish Fortum Oil Corporation, the second largest oil refining company in Scandinavia, operates one of the most modern refineries in Europe at the Porvoo site close to Helsinki.
After completion, the new production line, which is currently under construction, will produce sulphur-free, environment-friendly fuels, in particular diesel.
The plant with an annual capacity of approximately 1 million ton will be on stream at the end of 2006.
