HIMA is supplying safety technology for the TDA production plant of Bayer MaterialScience
(Brühl, Germany, 25/4/2005)
Safety-related controllers provided by HIMA Paul Hildebrandt GmbH + Co KG are monitoring diverse PLT protective equipment in Bayer MaterialScience AG's new TDA production plant at the Dormagen site. Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is a preliminary product in the manufacture of polyurethane, a versatile plastic with a rising number of applications, e.g. in the automotive and furniture industries.
A total of ten controllers of type H51q-HS will be used in the entire plant as emergency shut down systems (ESD) and also as a burner management systems (BMS) in the TAREX (thermal air purification for potentially explosive substances) plant area.
Besides the good experience with HIMA safety technology from projects in the past, the feature "Maintenance Override" was a crucial factor for the customer's decision in favour of the H51q-HS systems.
The eight systems for the TDA plant and the two systems for the connected thermal air purification process approximately 6,500 I/Os or 300 I/Os from a safety aspect. The process control of the entire plant takes place via the DeltaV control system from Emerson. H51q-HS is a modular and extendable safety system with TÜV-approved, maximum available CPUs for applications up to SIL 3. HIMA supplied the entire hardware and was also responsible for the mounting of the cabinets as well as for the programming and commissioning of the systems.
Maintenance Override are bridging systems, which permit the operator of a plant to bridgeover a sensor or actuator when the plant is in operation for carrying out maintenance work or function tests. This happens for a defined period by means of a special enable switch in the measuring station. This concept represents a major reduction in the work and expense incurred by such interventions in the proces
